Locals refer to it as “OB.” If sunbathing, surfing, fishing, sailing, shopping, or pier strolling are your thing or you just desire to purchase a home in a cozy beach town with a ton of character, look no further than Ocean Beach, California. You’ll find it just to the west of Point Loma and the beautiful La Playa neighborhood. A tourist finding this tucked-away treasure will enjoy the southernmost public beach on the Point Loma peninsula complete with a popular Dog Beach (off-leash laws allow your Rover to roam free!).
If you had to compare this community to any other, the closest you could find in "feeling" would be Santa Cruz to the north - minus any Big-Box retailers (although Starbucks has opened one store to some resistance). For loyal locals and residents everything you need is in Ocean Beach. On any given day you’ll see Antique shoppers, skateboarders, surfers, coffee house patrons and artists all going about their business in this very tight-knit society. In a very small area, the range of surroundings include; youth hostels, Wednesday farmer’s market (once voted best in the state by Sunset magazine), antiques, galleries, book dealers, clothing stores, furnishings, wonderful restaurants, great patio cafes & bars, and specialty food shops.
The Pier, the longest concrete fishing structure jutting out on the west coast, is good for fishing or just a walkabout. The tide pools are full of sea life and accessible not far from the famous Sunset Cliffs an attractive drive rich with great surf spots. For any beautiful sunset, crowds gather at the “Wall” or on any one of the upstairs bar balconies to check it out. Don’t be alarmed, but people are inclined to applaud as it sets. Less than 2 miles southwest of Sea World, Ocean Beach is THE laid-back neighborhood to call home.
Real Estate properties and structures in Ocean Beach neighborhoods could be called eclectic in nature. Homes for sale in OB vary from original neighborhood construction (1900’s) to ultra-modern contemporary, single level to multi level depending on lot layout. Prices for Ocean Beach homes range by age, lot size, view, and don’t forget, functionality. As you can imagine, the least obstructed view (for those seeking properties with ocean views) garner a higher consumer desire – meaning - higher price.
Ocean Beach homes maintain a relatively quiet atmosphere, and a small beach town ease even though developers have tried through the years to bring in larger commercial operations. Ocean Beach night life on Newport can get busy on weekends, so purchasing a home nearby might not be as quaint as other corners of the burgh. It really depends on your lifestyle and what you’re looking for. Likely, it's OB’s geographic location that makes it less accessible and ultimately, more popular to locals than Pacific Beach or Mission Beach dwellers.
